I just returned from the Big Stone Gap/Powell Valley/East Stone Gap classes reunion for 2008. It was a great success with many people from all over the country in attendance. We all had a great time. I was born February 1, 1955 and then adopted to a family and raised in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia. I also have a sister born 6-17-56 adopted into the same family. Mrs. Mars was my kindergarten teacher, and Mrs. Mahaffey my first grade teacher (I still have the silver dollar she gave me). I only stayed in first grade a few days because I already knew how to read, so I went into second grade. I think that teacher was Mrs. Carter. My third grade teacher was Mrs. Collier. We moved away in the middle of the year I was in fourth. I remember learning Virginia history in third grade, and in particular, the three geographic divisions of Virginia. I remember some of my classmates though I have of course lost touch with all of them: Patrick Murphy, Nancy Meador, Nancy Cline, Cecil Woodworth, Rodney and Bobby Botts, Jimmy Showalter are the names which come to mind.

Retired as Manager of Military Sales with QubicaAMF Worldwide in October 2007. Now live on Gwynn's Island, VA on the other side of the State from BSG. Married Carla Tabor from Marion, KY in 1968. Two children and three grandchildren.BSG represents a great time in my life and my years at PVHS were all that one could want. Good friends and good experiences. I'm actually writing this for my mother, Juanita Carter, that graduated in 1942, I think. She lived in Exeter with 5 brothers, Moran, AJ, Bo, Jerry, and the 5th that died in a car accident inhis teens. Mother is now 81 years old, and in assisted living in Florida, but still recalls fond memories of growing up in Exeter. My grandfather, Jim Carter, worked in the coal mines there. Mother speaks often of the friends she had there and how she loved growing up in the "holler". I live in Nashville, TN, and visit her often and call weekly to chat. I was pleased to find this website and just wanted to let you all know that I think of Big Stone Gap, and Exeter as a little slice of Heaven on earth. That's been engrained in me since childhood. I graduated from Powell Valley High School in 1991, and obtained my Master's in Criminal Justice from MTSU in 2002. I have since taken some coursework toward my Ph.D. in Psychology. Wise County schools need to consolidate in order to more effectively and efficiently put the county's financial resources to better educational uses for our youth. There is life beyond the mountains, and our children would not even be able to keep up in other major city high schools, much less universities. We need better school counselors to inform our youth of all possible career choices, not just the ones within a 100 mile radius of Wise County. It is unimaginable the careers one can go into in this day and time. Let's give our children a stronger foundation at a more successful future.

I attended all my school years in Big Stone Gap. Shortly after graduation, I was on my journey. I have to say it has been quite the journey across most of the United States. I have lived from one end of the U.S. to the other end which was Indiana, Portland, Oregon, Utah, California, Oklahoma, and back to Atlanta, GA. I have been here now for almost 21 years. Needless to say, I have thought about many of the people I went all the way through school with and wondered through the years where some might have ended up. I have contacted a few but don't know where many are. By the way Ernie Kelly - I enjoyed reading your writup regarding all our different teachers. That was quite interesting. I guess you were in Washington when I lived in Oregon. I remember how Don Thompson and I use to compete in our typing speed tests in Mrs. Whitt's class. By the way, sometimes he won and sometimes I won, so there. I get back to Big Stone as much as possible as my mother and brother still live there. Maybe I will run into some of you sometime. My name is Marsha R. Matin-Kerr and I am adopted. I was adopted in Xenia, OHIO on 6-21-1968. My birth mothers name was Carol WILSON or MULLINS(maiden). MULLINS was on my original birth certificate. She had a daughter, whom she called, SHERRY WILSON. She was 18 months older than I am. She would be born about Jan-March 1967 and graduated in 1984 or 1985. I am glad that I have found classmates from BSG through E-mail. Moved from BSG June 15,1955. I needed a credit in History to get my diploma. I finished Bellevue High in 1956; with 3 extra credits. I met 105 Seniors & happy to say that many are still "in touch" & are my friends. The Clumberland Plateau is almost as Beautiful as Big Stone Gap. I guess the teacher who made the most impact on me was Mr Emory Stallard in 6th grade at Appy Elementary. He was forever patient and kind to this painfully shy MI transplant. (Years later, he was also my son's kindergarten teacher.) Who could ever forget the hilarious 'fights' between Mr Holloman and Mrs. Murphy at AHS? Or getting a Coke from Coach Riggs at recess? I will always equate 6th period study hall with hearing the "Tricky Sixty" band practice. Not all my memoories were good, but they helped make me who I am today and for that I will always be grateful. I attended BSG Elem. from 5th-7th grades, from 1962-1965. I loved it and regretted having to move. My Mama died when I was in the 5th grade. I went to ESG elementary and to Powell Valley until 1967. There are very few happy memories at Powell Valley due to the cliques and the clique loving teachers. Mr Lewis and an English teacher who later married him were the only ones that treated everyone the same. Johnnie Marshall, the Reardon brothers, and all of the so-call jocks were truly mean and I often wonder if they realize just how hurtful they were and these memories never fade.

Attending schools in the small community of Appalachia, Virginia were some of the best years of my life. Teachers made a real impact and difference in my life. The one teacher that I would like to thank on this website mainly is Mrs. Judy Sadler, Appalachia Elementary School...5th grade! Thank you for making a difference in my life. All of my teachers made a difference. Beginning in kindergarten with Mrs. Judy Johnson, 1st grade with Mrs. Alice Green, 2nd grade with Mr. Howard Sandt, 3rd grade with Mrs. Joyce Collins, 4th grade with Mrs. BB Collins, 5th grade with MRS. JUDY SADLER, 6th grade with Mrs. Sigrid Holleman, 7th grade with Mr. Ted Thompson/Mr. Rick Blair/Mr. Philip Bates. All through Appalachia High School with Mr. Ed Hutchinson, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Adams, Coach Turner (which will be long remembered, never forgotten, and very much loved by all students who ever attended AHS). Others such as Mr. Holloman - vice principal and Mr. Nash - principal (who will also be long remembered, never forgotten, and very much loved by all students who ever attended AHS) will always hold a special place in my heart. The teachers are too numerous to name and too great and dedicated to give comment to each one personally....but, you all hold a dear place in my heart and life. You helped to find my destiny, to dare to hope, to believe in dreams, to achieve, to succeed, to become the person that I am today. I want to thank you each and every one. I thank God for small schools and communities such as Appalachia...with the heart of a lion and the preserverance to make it no matter what! It really is ancient history for me, but I still remember PVHS! I can't remember the names of very many classmates but I still remember a lot. One of my favorite memories was the cafeteria: I loved the hot dogs and the soup beans! The cooks were Rose Tate and Edith Shuler, and wow, could they make home-cooked meals! I also remember Billie Jean Scott and Miss Broadwater and both Miss Brooks and Mrs. Brooks, Jack Gibbs, Cecil Maddox, Iloe Read, Harley Stallard, Faith Cox, Callie Darnell, Miss Dingus, Grace Rose, Mr. Skeens, and some others in my mind but their names have slipped out of my history, but I hope not others. I definitely remember graduation in June 1963 when the band started playing "Pomp and Circumstance": we were all lined up in the parking lot laughing and very excited, then suddenly Mrs.Brooks (Wilma) was crying and that was the moment I realized our high school years--Powell Valley High School and Big Stone Gap--were OVER! It was a crushing emotional moment where life took a major turning point and for me I never went home again (except for funerals and a some holidays.)Reading the comments is actually very scary because all of people are talking about things and people from a much later period and there are very few people left from my era! The old order changeth!

I miss the mountains. Growing up in Big Stone I had no idea how fortunate I was. South West VA is a very special area. Stay if you can. Living and working in Rhode Island. Losts of beaches, but no mountains. The highest point in RI is a hill.
